Buddha

5/21/09: What a sweet face! This big girl was left homeless after her family's house burned. They had no choice but to surrender her to the shelter with her 9-year old Pomeranian playmate. Buddha is 13 years old. Can you imagine what she's thinking after being with her family for so long?

Buddha is a big girl - about 55 lbs. She has great eyes. Buddha has significant hair loss on her rear legs because she was burned when she tried to go back in the burning house. She's all healed now, but it is doubtful that the hair will grow back. Buddha is house trained and really hates a crate. She is on heartworm preventive and current on her Rabies vaccination. Because of her age, we are not vaccinating her for distemper/parvo/bordatella. Buddha enjoys her bath and is a pretty good eater. She really loves milk bone treats.

Buddha doesn't want to get too far away from the humans of the house and she's great with the other dogs - both male and female. She's relatively quiet unless she thinks she's alone - then she makes really strange noises. The first day we had her, we had to leave the house for a while, so we left her in the den alone. When we got back, she had ripped the screen and gone out the window. She didn't go far and was exhausted and ready to get in the car when I found her. The next time we had to leave her, we left her in the den with the gate to the kitchen open. We also left Penny and Elvis with her. This time there was no problem at all.

We know that only a special person will want to adopt a 13-year old, but we know someone is out there who is willing to give this sweet girl a place to live out the rest of her life.

5/26/09: After being with Buddha for almost a week now, we're almost positive that she isn't 13 years old. Buddha has really white teeth and no gray in her muzzle. We believe somebody has miscalulated her age. The doctor comes today, so we'll ask her what she thinks.

5/26/09: Dr. Helton says that she doesn't think Buddha is 13 years old - maybe 8 or 9. She also says that the hair loss on Buddha's rear legs is caused from a yeast infection. She might have had some burns, too, but yeast is the problem now. She's also scratching quite a bit. So, we're treating her for a skin infection, and who knows - her hair just might grow back. We hope so. Buddha is such a good girl. She loves everybody. Our granddaughters were here today and she really liked them. Yea!!!

6/12/09: Buddha is doing great. Her itching has stopped and some of her hair is growing back. She likes chewing on nylabones.

She loves sleeping on my dirty shoes!

7/1/09: Look what Ms. Buddha surprised us with today!

Yes, we suspected Buddha was pregnant when she swelled up like a balloon about 10 days ago. She went into labor late last night. First pup was born at 11:00 p.m. on 7/1/09; the next four were born over the next five hours; then 8 hours later, the last one came. Their names are Ceasar, Augustus (Gus), Julius, Pom Pei, Cleopatra (Cleo) and Venus - 4 boys and 2 girls. We're sure these are mixed puppies, but we don't know what with. :)

This means that Buddha won't be ready for adoption for a while. She'll be busy raising her little family. She's such a good mommie.

3/5/2010: In September, we placed Buddha in a great home, but it didn't work. We're not sure what the problem was but she's back with us now. We think Buddha would do best in a home with no other dogs. We are really hoping that the right home will come along for Buddha so she'll have her own home to feel safe in.

5/9/2010: Buddha is doing very well. She takes a calming medication 2x a day that helps her not be mean to the other dogs, but we still think she would do best in a home with no other dogs or with just one maybe. Lots of activity upsets her and that seems to be what gets her going.

We require that a home visit by a volunteer be done prior to adoption. The purpose of the home visit is to ensure that the information given during the adoption process is correct and that the home is the right match for the dog being adopted. The home visit also gives adopters a chance to ask questions about the adoption process.

The adoption fee for Buddha is $150, which helps to offset the cost of her medical care.
