Adoption Policy

Regardless of where the dogs in our program come from, we are their only voice. It is our responsibility to place them in homes where they will be given the things they deserve: love, attention, understanding, training, patience, medical care, proper nourishment & housing and companionship. Therefore, we screen each applicant very thoroughly and require a home visit. We take our responsibility to these animals very seriously and strive to do the best job we can in making sure that each dog who comes through our program has a bright future. Please remember that while you may know yourself to be a wonderful dog owner, we do not know you personally and have to base our decisions on our prior experiences, operation guidelines, and what we know we want for the individual dogs in our care.

Shar-Pei Rescue of Tennessee is under NO obligation to adopt an animal to any individual and adoption decisions are strictly "our call". Our average adoption fee is usually $200-$250. We reserve the right to adjust this amount up or down depending on factors such as the age of the dog, length of time in rescue, adoptability factors and/or how much care was needed to get this dog ready for adoption.

Our dogs are placed into family situations only within the United States and Canada. We feel that meeting our Adopters provides a chance to build a relationship that will last the lifetime of the dog. Therefore, we do not ship our dogs and Adopters must be willing to drive to Tennessee to complete an adoption. Depending on our personal circumstances, there are instances where we can meet someone in the surrounding states.

Minimum requirements for adopting from Shar-Pei Rescue of Tennessee are:

  • All applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
  • The adopted dog MUST live inside as a member of the family.
  • Demonstrated responsible dog ownership. Current animals must be spayed/neutered, on heartworm preventative (type and frequency as recommended by your vet) and current on vaccinations. We will contact your vet to verify information provided about current pets.
  • Willingness to participate in a formal obedience training and/or socialization program if recommended.
  • We prefer our adopters to own their home although we will consider a rental in certain situations. If we do adopt to a rental, we will contact your landlord to verify that you are allowed to have a dog.
  • We STRONGLY prefer that our dogs go to homes with securely fenced yards. Whether you live in the city or in the country, no dog can be safely left to run free without your direct supervision and control. The price of such freedom is inevitably injury or death: from automobiles, from Animal Control, or from justifiably irate neighbors. The unfenced country dog will sooner or later discover the neighbor's livestock and could cause harm to such. Many state laws allow a livestock owner to kill any dog chasing or worrying his stock, or running deer on his property...and livestock owners are quick to act on this right. The unfenced city dog may exercise his catching instinct on joggers, bicyclists, other animals and automobiles. An unfenced dog is always destined for disaster.

If you cannot meet these basic requirements, please wait until your circumstances change before applying to adopt. Remember that we WILL verify all information that is provided on your application.

Adoptions are not done on a "first-come, first-serve" basis. Our goal is to make the best match between potential homes and the dog. If we have multiple applications for the same dog, we will review all applications and decide which home can offer the best situation for a particular dog. This does not mean that you aren't eligible for adoption....just that we have another home that better meets what we are looking for in regards to THAT dog.

All dogs are temperament tested and their health is monitored prior to placement. However, we cannot make any guarantees regarding health or temperament. We will provide the Adopter with a complete and honest assessment of both health and temperament but animals adopted are NOT warranted for health or behavior/temperament. Under no circumstances would we adopt out a dog that has a known bite history, unstable temperament or a known terminal health problem. Known health or temperament issues will be fully disclosed to the Adopter by Rescue.

Complete medical records will be provided to the Adopter upon the signing of the Adoption Contract. All dogs leaving Rescue will be fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to being adopted. Other medical care, such as entropian surgery or heartworm treatment, will be provided to each dog as needed. Some dogs will be mircochipped prior to being adopted. If your dog is microchipped, please be aware that the chip will be registered to Rescue and your name will be ADDED to the chip once the adoption is finalized. Rescue Information cannot be removed from the microchip.

You can expect us to keep in touch with you for the lifetime of the dog and we will always be here to provide support should there be any problems. We do require that the dogs be returned to us in the event that you cannot keep the dog. This applies to ANY REASON at ANY POINT in an adoption. During the lifetime of this dog, you cannot give it away, sell it, or otherwise transfer ownership. This stipulation is part of our adoption contract and we take it very seriously. If you do not wish to keep in touch with us and abide by this restriction, please do not apply to adopt.

Please be advised that we are volunteers. We all have full-time jobs, families, and animals of our own. Many of us work more hours doing rescue work than we do at our full-time jobs. While we make every effort to process applications and return phone calls/emails immediately, this may not always happen. Please, be patient with us. Emergency medical calls and calls about the safety of our animals take priority. We will respond to ALL applications submitted.
