Gypsy

10/15/09: This cute little girl came to us by way of an East Tennessee shelter. She's a petite little girl, weighing only 34.5 lbs. but she needs to gain a few to get to her optimum weight. She's an excellent eater, so she'll gain weight quickly, we're sure. Gypsy is between 3-4 years old. She is a cream horsecoat, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She has very big, bright, brown eyes.

Gypsy is very well behaved. She sleeps on the foot of the bed every night and never makes a peep unless she hears something that makes her think somebody is trying to come in. :) It's fairly obvious that she hasn't been taught to play with other dogs, but she's certainly learning that here. She gets along great with our males and females and she LOVES our young granddaughters!

12/29/09: Gypsy is in her new home in Georgia tonight with Scott and Julia. I can tell you that Gypsy took to them immediately. You see, she's a hand chewer; she wouldn't leave their hands alone - a sure sign of affection. I promised them she would stop doing that soon. :) Gypsy will have a wonderful life with her new family. Already she's making friends with their Boxer. Gyp was so excited that it was hard to get good pictures. More will come later, Scott promised.

This girl was ready to go!

1/1/10: Hi Cindy, Gypsy is doing great.  She got her first bath today and seemed to really enjoy it.  My wife is walking her about 1 1/2 miles in the morning and I am walking her about 1 mile in the afternoon and she is still full of energy.  We also think she is younger than 3 or 4.  She seems so puppyish in a lot of ways.  I will be sending pictures tomorrow. Scott

1/6/10: Just wanted to let you know that Gypsy is doing great!  Our cats have adjusted to her and they will come up to her and rub against her legs.  She is adjusting well to our work schedule and she gives us lots of kisses when we come home in the afternoon.  I am planning to take her to the vet soon and have more X-rays taken of her front leg.  She is definitely limping more when I take her for her walks but I think this is due to the cold weather.  My boxer has a problem with his rear leg and he is also limping more since the temperature dropped.  I will send more updates later. Scott

1/10/10:I just wanted to send you a quick update about Gypsy.  She is sleeping with us at the foot of the bed but seems to be indifferent to having a light cover.  She has definitely bonded more with Julia than with me but that is okay as we are both very happy that she is in our lives.  I have also cut back on the amount of walking on the leash during this cold weather and she is not limping as much as before.  We plan to go back to the previous amount of walking as soon as it gets warmer.  Julia and I would like to thank you again for the great work you are doing for this great breed! Scott

2/7/2010: I just wanted to let you know that Gypsy is doing great and has adjusted really well to her new home.  She has even helped one of our cats adjust to Shadow, our previous Shar Pei, passing away.  Our cat is 11 years old and had never known not having a dog in the house.  Kiki (our cat) had always slept in bed with us but when Shadow passed away he stopped sleeping with us.  In a lot of different ways he stopped doing almost all of his usual interactions with Julia and me.  However, since getting Gypsy, Kiki is now sleeping in bed with us again and being the very sociable cat he once was.  I know in my heart that he was grieving over the loss of Shadow but Gypsy has helped him with his loss.  I have some pictures that I will send with the next email showing Gypsy and Kiki sleeping beside each other.  Again, thanks for all of the work that you do. Scott

1/25/2010: Gypsy is doing great.  She has really adjusted to our lives and schedule.  She is still a "licker" and now gives all of our cats a good bath with her tongue.  The cats, for the most part, tolerate it for a little while and then run off from her.  We had a little excitement last weekend.  Gypsy bolted out the front door when Julia opened it and she had a nice little romp in the woods around the house.  She never really got very far from the house but would not come directly to us when we called her.  She would come up about 10 feet away and then run away from us.  She was having a grand old time but it did get frustrating and I am thinking about taking her to an obedience school so as not to have a repeat performance.  Julia certainly learned a lesson about watching Gypsy when the front door is open.  Gypsy also has the typical sharpei aversion to water.  She hates taking walks when it is raining and she is not very happy about bath time either.  She doesn't struggle when I am giving her a bath but it is very obvious from her attitude that she does not like it.  She will get very aloof with me for about an hour after I give her a bath.  Gypsy has also adjusted to our other dogs.  The only problem is with Sam, my black lab mix.  Sam is the alpha dog of our pets and Gypsy is still adjusting to this.  When I have them together both of them basically ignore each other.  With my other two dogs, Gypsy loves to frolic with them although she is still learning how to play with them.  Occasionally she will get too aggressive and I have to calm her down.  However, she is improving every day in this.  Again, Julia and I want to thank you for the great job you are doing and introducing Gypsy into our lives.  She is an absolute doll! Scott

3/6/2010:Hi Cindy, Gypsy is doing great.  She has fully integrated with all of our other pets and we are one big happy family.  The latest thing that Gypsy is doing is "spooning" with our oldest cat.  They both lay down on the ottoman usually with our cat resting against Gypsy's abdominal area.  Julia and I do have one question though.  Is it possible that Gypsy is allergic to cat dander?  She is doing a lot of chewing and scratching on the rear of her back.  I know there are no fleas and I am bathing her about every 10 to 14 days.  With my previous sharpei, Buck had absolutely no skin problems but I had to put Shadow on prednisone to control her scratching.  I am not wanting to have to put Gypsy on prednisone but I might not have any other choice if I can't figure out how to stop her from itching.  Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.  Thanks again for all that you do! Scott
